Taghazout sits 250 km west of Marrakech, a 3.5-hour drive on the A7 toll road. There are five real ways to make the journey: a direct surf shuttle (€25 from Souk to Surf), a CTM coach via Agadir (€13-22), a private transfer (€99-150), a shared grand taxi (€8-12 per seat), or a rental car. Most surfers with boards pick the surf shuttle or a private transfer because both handle luggage door-to-door.
It depends on three things: how many people you are, how much luggage (boards count), and how time-flexible you are.
| You are… | Best option | Price (per person) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo budget traveller, no boards | CTM bus + local connection | €13-22 | 4-4.5 hr |
| Solo or duo with surfboards | Souk to Surf shuttle | €25 | 3 hr 45 min |
| Group of 3-4 with luggage | Private transfer | €25-40 per head | 3-3.5 hr |
| Family with surfboards | Private 7-seater | €20-25 per head | 3-3.5 hr |
| Road trip lover | Rental car from Marrakech | €30-50/day | 3-3.5 hr |
From Marrakech you head south-west on the A7 toll motorway, descending out of the Haouz plain into Argana valley, then climbing into the Western High Atlas foothills before dropping down to the Atlantic at Agadir. The road is fully tolled, two lanes each side, with regular service stations roughly every 60 km. Tolls total around 65 dirhams (€6) for a passenger vehicle.
Approximate split:
Between the two cities the road crosses the Argana valley (worth a 10-minute stop for the cliff viewpoint) and skirts the edge of Souss-Massa National Park. There are no tourist must-sees on the route itself, the drive is functional rather than scenic, which is why most surfers prioritise comfort over a slow road trip.
Souk to Surf runs a dedicated surf shuttle network connecting Taghazout, Tamraght, Imsouane, Agadir and Essaouira to Marrakech and back. It’s the only operator built around surfers (board racks, surfboard-friendly luggage compartments) and the route is direct.
This is the option we recommend to nine out of ten surf-camp guests who don’t want to deal with bus stations + grand-taxi connections. The vehicle is air-conditioned, has Wi-Fi, and you’ll usually share with 6-8 other surfers heading the same way.
CTM is Morocco’s premier coach operator and runs frequent service Marrakech to Agadir. From Agadir you connect to Taghazout by city bus or grand taxi.
Premium-class buses have USB ports, Wi-Fi and reclining seats. Confort buses are basic but air-conditioned. Both are reliable, on time, and used heavily by Moroccan business travellers.
From Agadir bus station to Taghazout: city bus #32 or #33 runs every 30-40 minutes (6:30am to 8:30pm) for under 10 dirhams (€1). A grand taxi to Taghazout costs around 30 dirhams (€3) shared or 100 dirhams (€10) full vehicle.
Supratours (owned by ONCF, the national railway) runs a similar service with comparable prices and schedules. If CTM is sold out at your preferred time, check Supratours next.
Private transfers are the most popular option for surf-camp guests. Most camps in Taghazout, Tamraght and Imsouane will arrange one as part of your booking. Otherwise book directly from operators like Kiwitaxi, Transfers.ma or MG Taxis Morocco.
Most operators offer flight tracking, fixed prices in advance, multilingual drivers and luggage-to-room help at the destination. For a couple or a group of three with boards, the per-head cost works out close to the Souk to Surf shuttle but with the convenience of a private vehicle on your schedule.
Shared Mercedes-Benz grand taxis are the workhorse of Moroccan domestic transport. The taxi rank at Bab Doukkala in Marrakech runs them to Agadir as soon as 6 passengers fill the car.
Grand taxis are the cheapest motorised option but the most uncomfortable: 4 passengers in the back (3 in the row plus 1 squeezed), 2 next to the driver. They take surfboards on the roof rack but you negotiate a small extra fee (20-50 dh). Best for solo surfers with one bag who want to save money + experience the local rhythm.
Renting a car from Marrakech (city or airport) gives full flexibility for stops on the way: the Argana viewpoint, lunch in Taroudant or Aoulouz, a detour into Paradise Valley above Agadir.
The road is well-marked, easy to drive, and Moroccan rules of the road are reasonably followed on the highway. Two things to watch: avoid driving at night during the September-March rains (fog can be heavy crossing the Argana valley), and never leave anything visible inside the parked car at service stations or in Agadir’s centre.

If you’re flying into Marrakech and going straight to Taghazout (no city stop), three options:
The taxi ranks at Marrakech RAK can be intense. If it’s your first time in Morocco, pre-book a transfer through your surf camp or a service like Welcome Pickups, Transfers.ma or Kiwitaxi. Fixed price, no negotiation, no scams. Most flights into Marrakech are between 1pm and 9pm, which puts you in Taghazout for dinner.
Most surfers travel with one or two boards in a bag plus 15-23 kg of regular luggage. Here is what each option handles:
Travelling without your own board? Surfboard rental + shop guide in Taghazout covers where to grab a board on arrival.
Most Marrakech-Taghazout transfers are one-way airport drops. If you have time:
For everything you need to know before the trip, check our packing for a surf trip in Taghazout guide.
Direct: 3 to 3.5 hours by car or private transfer covering 250 km on the A7 toll road. Souk to Surf shuttle: 3 hours 45 minutes. CTM or Supratours bus via Agadir: 4 to 4.5 hours total once you factor in the local bus transfer at Agadir station. Add 30 minutes to any Marrakech estimate during medina rush hours (12-2pm and 7-9pm).
Shared grand taxi from Taghazout to Agadir (30 dh / €3) then CTM Confort bus to Marrakech (€13). Total around €16 per person for a solo traveller. Same route via Supratours is similar. The catch: 4 to 4.5 hours total travel time and you do the Agadir bus-station transfer yourself, which can be confusing on a first visit.
The only direct service is Souk to Surf’s shuttle (€25, 3 hr 45 min, twice daily). CTM and Supratours don’t run direct Taghazout-Marrakech; they cover Marrakech-Agadir, and you do the final 25 km to Taghazout separately by city bus or grand taxi.
€99 to €150 per vehicle door-to-door, depending on operator and vehicle size. Sedan for 1 to 3 passengers: €99 to €120. Minivan for 4 to 7 passengers: €125 to €150. Most operators include surfboards in the price. Most Taghazout surf camps arrange transfers as part of your booking; ask if it’s cheaper bundled.
Agadir for the shortest transfer: 25 km, 30 minutes, around €30 by private taxi. Marrakech for cheaper flights from European hubs but a 3.5-hour transfer that costs €30 to €50 more. Run both routes through Skyscanner for your dates and compare total cost: flight + transfer.
Yes. The A7 toll road is two lanes each way, lit, with regular service stations and a fully developed network of police checkpoints. Avoid driving after midnight in winter (occasional fog crossing the Argana valley). Most surf-camp transfers use experienced local drivers who know the route by heart. Keep your driving licence and passport handy for the routine checkpoints.
Yes, but they count as oversize luggage. Pay 50 to 100 dirhams (€5 to €10) at check-in. Boards travel in the under-bus luggage compartment; wrap nose and tail in clothes for protection. Souk to Surf is the easier option if you have boards because they’re built for surfers.
Possible but tight. The 3.5-hour drive each way leaves you maybe 5 hours in Marrakech if you leave Taghazout at 7am and want to be back for sunset. Better as a 1 to 2 night stay: drive up Saturday morning, sleep in a riad, return Sunday late afternoon. Most surf camps can arrange a 2-day side trip with airport transfer + 1 night riad in the medina.
